France will start stopping migrant vessels in English Channel following British demands

French officials have consented to begin stopping small boats in the Channel, after an extended period of pressure from the United Kingdom.

The change in policy follows the British leader wrote to the President urging him to support the initiative and stating there presently "have no effective deterrent" in the Channel.

French maritime police have been authorized to stop the small boats at sea, but only before they've picked up their migrants, according to official confirmation.

French police have infrequently intervened to prevent the heavily loaded boats leaving the shoreline because it is considered too great a danger to both personnel and individuals.

"It is essential that we implement these tactics this month... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel."

Now, a French maritime police spokesperson states officers will start intervening at sea, with the aim of safeguarding lives.

Significantly, the official ruled out the use of nets to intercept boats, which had earlier been suggested as a possible technique to snarl the engines of the vessels.

This determination to take action at all is a significant advancement, coming after a brief change towards a more aggressive strategy this warmer season, which ceased when the previous Interior Minister departed from office.

That was highlighted in July, preceding a meeting between the UK leader and French president, when French police were observed wading into the sea to damage the hulls of a boat.

Now French officials will once more be permitted to stop boats prior to they collect asylum-seeking individuals from the coastal areas of France's north coast, however it's not clear how the vessels will be stopped.
