Micky van de Ven Double Halts The Toffees' Unbeaten Streak at New Stadium

Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine saves to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and are six points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of the field

After a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only two shots on target, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to score.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have faded slightly and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of recognised centre-forwards - had scored just one league goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, as well, was unable to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.

The Toffees: The team head to Sunderland in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: The London club travel to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup match against the Magpies.
