In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The September revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
